This Wiki is dedicated to amateur theatre, and yet it is not always easy to define what amateur theatre is, and what is not. Very often the term ,amateur theatre’ is used in opposition to ,professional theatre’.

Aspects that can demarcate forms of theatre as amateur or professional can be the training of performers and further participants, the question of making a living out of theatre, the monetary profitability of shows, the self-image of theatre makers, the mastery of theatrical craft and the perceived artistic quality of the performance, the social structure and characteristics of the theatre company or group, the relationship with the audience, the linkage with a certain geographical location or a specific cultural tradition, and more.

There is often ambiguity in the assigning of theatre as amateur or professional because certain forms of theatre fulfill criteria that are partly more on the professional and partly more on the amateur side. At the same time, there are many theatre productions that intentionally bring together professional theatre makers and amateurs - meaning that while it might be possible in such a case to draw the line between amateur and professional contributors, the performance as a product can not easily be classified as one or the other.

The approach to the distinction of amateur and professional theatre discussed here is (so far) very much rooted in the European theatre tradition of the modern period.

== Aspects of distinguishing amateur and professional theatre ==
See here several aspects that may help to distinguish amateur from professional theatre. Many of the aspects have overlapping facets.

=== Professional training ===
''Key points:''

* Professionally trained performers as a factor of professional theatre
* Professionalisation of all theatre-related work/crafts/jobs
* Understandings of professional training today and in history
* Mastery of theatrical craft

=== Perception of artistic quality ===
''Key points:''

* contemporary bias of perceiving amateur theatre as artistically inferior, a bias which is grounded and (arguably) justified in the predominant assumption that professional training has a positive effect on the improvement of theatrical skills.
* [maybe side note on actors who pursue acting as a profession but deliberately decided against professional training in acting, which is probably more often found in the film sector than in theatre]
* In history: not necessarily amateur=poor skills, professional=refined skills (see dilettantism)
* cite Dirk de Corte / OPENDUEK research project, including ambitions of amateur theatre groups: social vs. artistic ambition, small vs. large audience ambition.

=== Making a living out of theatre ===
''Key points:''

* Amateurism as freedom of the need to make money out of art
* Professionalism as a way to make it work to make a living of your art, vs. precarity not only in the independent scene; the impoverished artist as a topos and as a reality.

=== Monetary profitability of theatrical shows / use of profits ===
''Key points:''
* A rather weak criterion: Where professional theatre is financed or subsidized by the state or other donors, it doesn’t need to be profitable
* Huge events in amateur theatre where a lot of money is generated.
* Tradition of charity practice in amateur theatre: donate surplus money for a good cause

=== Self-image of theatre makers as amateur or professional ===
''Key points:''
* Theatre makers can take pride both in being an amateur artist (dilettante…) or a professional artist.
* Some amateur theatre ensembles have the ‘amateur’ in their name (Liebhabertheatergesellschaft etc.)
* Some non-professional theatre makers aspire to a status of semi-professional or similar, often claiming high artistic standard due to experience and hard work, despite the lack of professional training/education.

=== Social structure and characteristics of theatre ensembles ===
In amateur theatre, you see often that ensembles consist of participants who are additionally linked through other, personal relationships, like family, spouses or friends. Reasons may be

* that amateur theatre is a leisure time activity and people prefer to spend their leisure time with people they like,
* that when there is want of more participants, members will try to recruit people they know well and they like,
* that many amateur theatre societies or groups don’t have a tight selection procedure, so they would include friends or family of their members as new members, as long as they contribute anything or something useful to the group.

It is typical for amateur theatre groups to also gather socially outside of rehearsals and performances.

Although in professional theatre the composition of a company is most often the result of decisions that were not taken by the company members themselves, you can also often find strong bounds between company members, as their work can bring them closely together. See also the (arguably euphemistic) term ‘theatre family’. However, being dependent on making a living out of theatre, professional theatre artists sometimes stay in contracts where they don’t feel easy with their colleagues, which is less likely in the amateur field, where one aim is to spend quality time.

Professional theatre people also often spend time together after work.

[[Making theatre (likewise professional and amateur) often creates a sense of togetherness or connectedness for the people involved. They feel as a closely-linked group because they pursue something others don’t, because making theatre differs a lot from other (professional and leisure) activities [how?] and also demands a high amount of commitment. During the rehearsal process and during performances they often share emotional moments of insecurity, intimacy, joy, comicality, etc. At the same time, there can be conflicts, competition, envy and exclusive group dynamics. One difference between amateur and professional theatre can be in this context, that amateurs can more often rather easily withdraw from a group or a production they don’t feel comfortable with, while in such a case professional theatre makers face conflicting factors like being bound by a contract, or needing to continue the job for existential/self-sustaining or in view of their career development.]]

Tellspiele Hägglingen is an amateur theatre association („Verein Tellspiele Hägglingen“) in the municipality [[wikipedia:Hägglingen|Hägglingen]] in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. They build upon a long tradition of amateur theatre in the village. Between 1950 and early 2000s, the association’s main aim was to stage Friedrich von Schiller’s play [[wikipedia:William_Tell_(play)|“Wilhelm Tell”]], a play that tells a version of the key founding myth of Switzerland that has become very popular. Today, Tellspiele Hägglingen stage open-air productions of plays of different authors and in various genres.

== History ==
In Hägglingen, there is evidence of amateur theatre already in the 19th century, see for example announcments of performances in the cantonal newspaper of 1873.<ref name=":0">''Aargauisches Wochenblatt'', 15 Feb 1873 (announcements).</ref><ref name=":1">''Aargauisches Wochenblatt'', 10 May 1873 (announcements).</ref>

According to the website of the association<ref name=":2">https://tellspiel.ch/</ref>, early theatre amateurs in Hägglingen preferred to stage classical authors. During times of war and crisis, there was a taste for traditional folk drama. In 1951 there arose the idea of reviving the local theatre tradition by staging “Wilhelm Tell” by Friedrich von Schiller, leading to the establishment of the Tellspiele Hägglingen as an association.

Over the next decades, there were five productions of Schiller’s “Wilhelm Tell”. The 2001 production was the first to be staged open-air. In 2006 the Tellspiele decided to explore a different version of the Tell story and staged “Apollonia Tell” by Hans Glarner. Since then, they have turned to other subjects and plays, partly due to the wish to make the most of the opoortunities of their open-air stage.<ref name=":2" />

Between 1950 and early 2000s, the association’s main aim was to stage Friedrich von Schiller’s play “Wilhelm Tell”, a play that tells a version of the key founding myth of Switzerland that has become very popular. Today, Tellspiele Hägglingen stage open-air productions of plays of different authors and in various genres.

== History ==

== History ==
Jesuit drama developped in various European countries in the course of Counter-Reformation as a response to severe critique of Catholicism.

In the municipality of Domat/Ems (until 1943: Ems<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domat/Ems</ref>) in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, there has been a long tradition of amateur theatre from mid-19th century on that lasts until today. The performances got very popular and the "Emser Theater" (''Engl.'' Theatre in Ems) was well-known in the region.<ref>https://www.theater-ems.ch/ueber-uns</ref>

== History ==
The earliest reference of a Liebhabertheater (''Engl.'' amateur theatre) in Ems dates from 1843.<ref name=":0">Blarer, Sigi: Theaterverein Domat-Ems, Domat-Ems GR, in: Kotte, Andreas (Hg.): Theaterlexikon der Schweiz, Chronos Verlag Zürich 2005, Band 3, S. 1890–1891. https://tls.theaterwissenschaft.ch/wiki/Theaterverein_Domat-Ems,_Domat-Ems_GR</ref> Various associations, choirs, and other groups in Ems regularly performed historical or patriotic plays.

In 1971, the [[Theaterverein Domat-Ems|Theaterverein Domat/Ems]] (''Engl.'' Theatre Association Domat/Ems) was founded and is active until today.
Over time, several venues were in use for theatre performances in Ems (or Dormat/Ems). For example, from 1895 the "Glashüttensaal" served as a performance space, a venue which today doesn't exist anymore.<ref name=":0" />

In the town of Dormat/Ems (until 1943: Ems) in the Caton of Graubünden, Switzerland, there is a long tradition of amateur theatre.

In 1971, the Theaterverein Domat/Ems (''Engl.'' Theatre Association Domat/Ems) was founded and is active until today.
== History ==
Formers members of the Didaskalia society (an association of former grammar school pupils) founded in 1866 the Musikalisch-dramatischer Verein Zürich. The association was divided into a musical and a theatrical department and started their performing tradition with musical-dramatic soirees. The first public theatre performance was Rudolph Kneisel's and Ferdinand Gumpert's "Die Lieder des Musikanten" (''Engl.'' "The musicians's songs") on 21 March 1867. In the 1870s, the association renamed itself to Dramatischer Verein Zürich, due to differences between the two departments and withdrawals of members. The association dedicated itself to the staging of vernacular plays in Zurich German dialect, and accordingly performed many plays of local playwrights, often as first performances ever. In addition, the Dramatischer Verein Zürich also staged plays in High German from authors like Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer or Friedrich Schiller. Until the 1930s, the association often performed two or more plays a year, whereas public performances decreased in the 1940s. In 1984, the association resolved their disbanding.<ref name=":0" />

The Casino is a specific type of urban building and location that became popular in Switzerland in the early 19th century. Casinos served as urban venues for social and cultural life, typically containing a lounge, a big hall for musical, theatrical or dancing events, several smaller rooms as well as various restaurants. In many Swiss cities and towns, the Casino was a popular venue for amateur theatre performances.

Locations with similar functions are party halls in village inns, municipal theatres, concert halls, congress halls, community centres, et cetera.

== Differentiation of terms ==
The Casino in Switzerland is not to be confused with casino in the sense of a mere gambling hall, an officers' casino, or a brothel.

== History ==
After 1800, we see increasing foundations of bourgeois associations - be they political, ecomonical, social, academic, literary, musical, or theatrical. Looking for places where to host their events, the associations initiated the building of casinos.

== Architecture and Examples ==
In the first half of the 19th century, Casinos were mainly built as smaller classical buildings with a cubistic body, a portico, and a pediment, like the Casinos in Zürich (1806), Bern (1821), Basel (Sommercasino 1824, Stadtcasino 1826), Lausanne (1824), Aarau (1831), La Chaux-de-Fonds (1835), Herisau (1837), Baden (1843), and Bellinzona (1850).

In the second half of the 19th century there is also the bigger construction type with risalits, domes and massive orders of columns. Examples are the Casinos in Bern (1866), Baden (1872), Luzern (1882), Genf (1884), Lugano (1896), and Interlaken (1898).

After 1900 you can find Jugendstil Casinos like the buildings in Zürich (Corso 1899), Locarno (1902), Bern (1906), Lausanne (1908), Vevey (1908), and Zug (1911).
Schiller's play "Wilhelm Tell" about the freedom fighter of the same name deals with the foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy.
== History and Background ==
The idea to perform the William Tell story in Altdorf reaches back to 1512.<ref name=":0">https://www.tellspiele-altdorf.ch/geschichte/chronik</ref> The first performance of Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell" took place in 1899 on the initiative of the local male choir, staged in a theatre that was built only for that purpose. From then on, the play was performed on a regular basis.<ref name=":0" />

Due to the Tell legend and to Schiller's play, the town of Altdorf is the site of the famous scene when the skilled crossbowman Tell succeds to hit with his shot an apple that was maliciously put on his son's head by Tell's adversary, Gessler.

== Organisation ==
The society behind the event is the Tellspielgesellschaft<ref>https://www.tellspiele-altdorf.ch/tellspielgesellschaft</ref>, founded in 1898.<ref name=":0" /> While the Tellspiele performers are all amateurs and many tasks are taken on by volonteers, the way of working and the organisational structure of the Tellspiele resemble professional theatre in many ways.<ref>See e.g. the structure of the society's board: <nowiki>https://www.tellspiele-altdorf.ch/tellspielgesellschaft</nowiki></ref>
The tradition started with the first production in 1912 and since 1947 there have been performances every year.<ref name=":0">Tellspiele Interlaken: association (official website): https://www.tellspiele.ch/de/Verein</ref> The ensemble consists of approximately 200 theatre amateurs, partly in speaking roles, partly acting as musicians, equestrians, or mutes.
Schiller's play "Wilhelm Tell" about the freedom fighter of the same name deals with the foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Though the storyline is highly fictive, the play contributed significantly to the founding myth and the Swiss self-conception of independence and upstanding.

== History ==
A local teacher in Matten near Interlaken, August Flückiger, initiated a performance of "Wilhelm Tell" by Friedrich Schiller with his pupils, cooperating with the "Dramatische Gesellschaft" (''Engl.'' "Dramatic Society") in Interlaken. The first performance took place in 1912.<ref name=":0" /> In 1930, the Tellspielverein was established, an association that has been hosting the Tellspiele until today. From the beginning, the Tellspiele aimed to attract a wide audience and thereby expand tourism in the region. In addition, the association expected positive effects of the theatre activitites regarding education and morale of the volunteers.<ref name=":1" />

From 1947 on, the Tellspiele Interlaken have been performing every year, mostly during the summer months.

== Recent developments ==
After more than 100 years, the Tellspiele Interlaken are still active. Due to the covid pandemic, there was a break in 2020 and 2021. A novelty took place in the season 2024: With a production of "Robin Hood", the Tellspiele staged for the first time another play than "Wilhelm Tell".<ref>Tellspiele Interlaken: Robin Hood (official website):https://www.tellspiele.ch/de/robin-hood</ref>

== Venue ==
The Tell-Arena is situated at the outskirts of Matten and qualifies as the biggest landscape theatre in Switzerland. The scenery is the actual construction of a medieval village including a chapel and a defensive tower. The sheltered grand stand has space for 1500 spectators. Today the Tell-Arena is equipped with modern lighting engeneering and sound technology.<ref>Tellspiele Interlaken: site (official website): https://www.tellspiele.ch/de/Verein/Arealnutzung
