The Altstadttheater Hornburg e.V. (also Altstadt-Theater Hornburg) is an amateur theatre group from Hornburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, that has performed since 1983.[1] It stages one comedy each spring and, since 2022, plays in the village community hall of Heiningen.[2]

History

The theatre group began performing in Hornburg in 1983. It celebrated its 25th season in 2008 with the comedy Studentenfutter.[3] After about 30 years as an informal theatre company it was entered in the register of associations at the Braunschweig local court on 22 May 2013; the board had been elected at a founding meeting the year before.[4] The group marked its 40th anniversary in 2023.[5]

For many years the group played in the Haus Hagenberg in Hornburg and also gave performances in the Lessingtheater in Wolfenbüttel and, in 2018, at the Rammelsberg in Goslar.[6][7] Because Goslar had no replacement for the closed Odeon-Theater, the group planned a "Theater-Zirkus Goslar" in a circus tent for May 2020, with guest performances by other groups; it was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic and took place from 29 April to 8 May 2022.[8][9] When the Haus Hagenberg was no longer available, the group moved to the Dorfgemeinschaftshaus Heiningen in 2022.[9] In 2025 a grant from the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz allowed it to complete the stage there, including the old stage curtain from the Haus Hagenberg.[10]

Repertoire

The group's main productions are popular comedies and farces, mostly by authors published by German amateur-theatre publishers, such as Winnie Abel, Hans Schimmel and Jürgen Baumgarten. In 2021 it staged Lutz Hübner's scene collage Gretchen 89ff. on Goethe's Faust instead of a comedy.[11]

The group has also repeatedly performed the open-air play Anna Landmann – Mutmaßliche Szenen aus ihrem Leben by the Goslar author Hans-Georg Ruhe, written in 1996, about a woman from Osterode am Fallstein who was accused of witchcraft in Hornburg in 1596 and executed in January 1597. The 60-minute production was shown in 2023 at Burg Vienenburg, in Winnigstedt and on the market square in Hornburg.[12]
