History
The association was founded on the initiative of Adi Pfeiler; the name Bühnenfreunde was suggested by Max Walser and adopted at the founding meeting. The first performance of the Theater- und Unterhaltungsverein Bühnenfreunde Augsburg, Zweimal Hochzeit, took place on 7 April 1951 at the Gaststätte Pfälzer Hof. In 1955 Heinz Greiner became chairman, and the statutes defined the association's purpose as the cultivation of folk and amateur theatre. A youth group existed from 1955; since 1960 the association has owned a country house in Holzhausen near Gablingen for its members.[2]
A guest performance in Winterthur, Switzerland, took place in 1970. It was later invited to the Hessentag in Grünberg in 1980 and took part in the first Woche der Volkstheater in Augsburg in 1982, the international folk theatre days in Rosenheim in 1986 and the fifth Swabian theatre days in Babenhausen in 1999. Since 1982 it has held regular meetings with the theatre club Hl. Kreuz in Albstadt-Ebingen. Guests at its 40th anniversary on 5 January 1991 included the Lord Mayor of Augsburg, Peter Menacher. For lack of new members, the youth group has been inactive since 2007.[2]
The association celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2026. In autumn 2026 it cancelled its planned November production after the sudden departure of its director and several actors.[3][1]
Repertoire
The spring and autumn productions each run over two weekends, alternating between folk theatre and boulevard comedy. The acting group consisted of 15 to 20 players, an artistic director and two directors.[2] Among its long-standing members is the playwright Ulla Kling, a member since 1975.[1]
Organisation
The association cooperates closely with the Theater Gersthofen; several players are members of both.[2]
