The Bürgerbühne Wipfeld e. V. is a community amateur theatre in Wipfeld, a village on the Main in the district of Schweinfurt, Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. It grew out of a theatre project for the village's anniversary in 2018 and was founded as an association in 2019. Its stated aim is to bring theatre to rural areas, with residents performing under professional artistic direction and trying out contemporary and experimental forms.[1][2]

History

The group's first production, (M)ein Stück Dorf, was created for the village anniversary in 2018 and, according to the association, looked critically at the social situation in Wipfeld rather than presenting an idealised picture. The non-profit association was founded out of this project in 2019 with more than 40 founding members. Its statutes allow the board to appoint an artistic director, honorary or paid, so that professional expertise can be brought to the village.[1]

On 16 October 2021 the association opened its own rehearsal stage, Probebühne X-per*iment, a black-box space with seating for 50 in the village's community centre, provided by the municipality and equipped with lighting and sound technology with support from a regional development budget. The opening was attended by the district administrator, Florian Töpper, and the mayor, Tobias Blesch.[3]

Productions

  • (M)ein Stück Dorf (2018, revived 2019), a devised piece about Wipfeld.[1][4]
  • Thomas Bernhard's Der Theatermacher (2019), performed in a small pub in Wipfeld and used to discuss why theatre in a village makes sense.[1]
  • Judas (2021) by Lot Vekemans, a monologue that the group, directed by its artistic director Max Sauer, performed with six actors on three stages linked by livestream, with the audience moving between them. Reviewers in the Schweinfurter Tagblatt wrote that the voices and images multiplied without losing the logic of the text.[5]
  • Penthouse by Volker Zill, a chamber play about four people viewing a flat.[4]
  • Warten auf Tränengas by Andreas Sauter and Bernhard Studlar, a play about protest and personal responsibility; district administrator Töpper described the premiere as "highly political and highly topical".[6]

Other activities

Under the name Guckkasten the association organises shared trips to theatres, followed by a discussion over a drink, and it invites children's theatre productions to Wipfeld or plays with children as part of the summer holiday programme.[1]
