The BayArt Volkstheater e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It grew out of a folk theatre course at the Munich adult education centre (VHS) and staged its first production in 2000; it currently plays at the Pepper theatre in Neuperlach.[1][2]

History

In the 1999/2000 season the actress Johanna Baumann, who had trained at the Hanna Umlandt drama school and worked on many Munich stages and in television, took over the VHS Volkstheater course when it was about to fold after its leader left. She directed BayArt's first production in 2000, Der zerbrochene Krug in a Bavarian adaptation by Leopold Ahlsen after Kleist's The Broken Jug, and directed almost all of the group's productions until 2007. Baumann, a co-founder of the association, died in April 2025 at the age of 90.[1]

Later directors included Monika Rasky and Robert Bernhard; the founding member Friedl Bunke, long an actress and prompter with the group, later directed new episodes of the Königlich Bayerisches Amtsgericht.[3]

Repertoire

The group stages Bavarian folk theatre and comedy. In February 2026 it premiered Komödie im Dunkeln, a German version of Peter Shaffer's Black Comedy, at the Pepper in the PEP shopping centre in Neuperlach.[2]
