The Bayerische Volksbühne Watzmann e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It grew out of a youth group at a leisure centre in the Englschalking district in the late 1970s and was founded as an association on 1 February 1984. It stages Bavarian comedies in spring and autumn, with food served during performances.[1]

History

The group's origins lie in a youth group at the Spiel- und Begegnungszentrum Fideliopark (SBZ) in Englschalking. In December 1976 the leader of the centre's senior citizens' group asked the young people, then aged 15 to 18, to perform a short play at the seniors' Christmas party; they staged the one-act play Christbaumkerzl. At the end of 1978 one of them, Willi Maier, proposed staging Der Watzmann ruft, the rustic musical by Wolfgang Ambros, Manfred Tauchen and Joesi Prokopetz, whose text he had transcribed line by line from the record. It was first performed on 21 December 1979 before 40 spectators in a youth centre in Eching and the next day before 60 at the SBZ, and it gave the group its name. In 1979/80 the group staged two productions at once, among them Ein Münchner im Himmel and Die lebendige Leich'.[2]

The association was formally founded on 1 February 1984.[1]

The group performs Bavarian comedies and farces, usually one production in spring and one in autumn.[3]
