The Dramatischer Club Alpenröserl e. V. is an amateur theatre club in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1922, it describes itself as Munich's oldest amateur stage still performing. It stages Bavarian folk plays and comedies and has played in the Parkpalast Sendling, the clubhouse restaurant of the sports club BSC Sendling, since 1995.[1][2]

History

In 1922 a group of young people began meeting weekly to make music at the Gaststätte Ludwig Vorstadt in Munich's Westend. When the group had grown to more than 25 people, it decided to form a theatre club as well, and on a proposal by Georg Dick founded the Mandolinen Klub Alpenröserl, with Dick as chairman. Its first production was the drama with songs Die Alpenblume, performed by 13 players in the old Hackerkeller, since the club's inn had no stage. The club then moved from inn to inn until in 1931 it found a permanent home in the Vinzenziusheim (today St. Rupert) and renamed itself Musik-Dramatischer Klub Alpenröserl. In 1938 it was renamed Volksspielgemeinschaft Alpenröserl; by then it had performed some 80 different plays, each only once. During the Second World War its clubhouse was bombed and two members were killed.[3]

Performances resumed on 29 April 1950 with Ludwig Ganghofer's Der Geigenmacher von Mittenwald. The club, then 36 members strong, adopted its present name Dramatischer Club Alpenröserl and decided to stage only folk plays (Volksstücke). Georg Dick, chairman for 40 years and director of plays for 49 years, died in 1970; Erich Steiner had succeeded him as chairman in 1962. In 1978 membership fell to eight and no performances could be given, but newspaper advertisements brought new members, and by June 1980 the club again had 15. In its first 60 years it staged 212 different plays, with guest performances in Augsburg and Brixen (South Tyrol).[3]

From autumn 1982 the club performed in the large hall of the Hofbräukeller at Wiener Platz, where a stage was built for it; the building was damaged by fire on 6 April 1987. After the autumn 1994 season the club left the Hofbräukeller, built a new stage in the Parkpalast Sendling and opened there on 7 April 1995 with Ein feiner Kerl.[3][2] The club's centenary on 7 March 2022 was marked by a special performance on 30 April 2022 of Ralph Wallner's Mucks Mäuserl Mord, attended by the author.[4]
