The Heimatbühne Obergiesing e. V., now called Münchner Heimatbühne e. V., is an amateur dialect theatre in the Obergiesing district of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Since 1990 it has performed Bavarian folk plays (bayerisches Volkstheater) in the parish hall of the church Königin des Friedens, many of them written by its long-time leader Sepp Hofmann.[1][2]

History

According to the Abendzeitung, the Heimatbühne Obergiesing has played Bavarian folk theatre in the Pfarrsaal Königin des Friedens since 1990, with an emphasis on tradition and dialect, and aims to train dialect actors and to preserve the dialect. Its audience comes from all over Bavaria as well as from Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol.[1] In 2017 Sepp Hofmann, a native of South Tyrol, had run the theatre for 27 years and brought a new play to the stage every year; its actors came from Upper and Lower Bavaria, the Palatinate, Franconia, Tyrol and other regions, each speaking their own dialect.[3] The German Wikipedia list of Munich theatres gives its current name as Münchner Heimatbühne e. V.[2]

Repertoire

The theatre usually stages one play a year in spring, with about nine performances. Productions include Sepp Hofmann's three-act folk play Aufruhr in Oberberg (April–May 2013),[4] the Bavarian folk play classic Der Geisterbräu (April 2016, nine performances)[5] and a rural play written by Hofmann with eleven actors in spring 2017.[3] Once it played two new comic one-acters by Hofmann on one evening.[1]

Venue

The theatre plays in the parish hall (Pfarrsaal) of the church Königin des Friedens at Werinherstraße 50 in Munich-Giesing, where South Tyrolean snacks are served during the performance.[5][3]
