History
In summer 1982 nine members of an Oberwerrn parish youth group were left without a leader and, to stay together, decided to put on a play. After almost six months of rehearsal without a director, Das Lebenselixier was performed in 1983 on a makeshift stage. The group took the name Junge Oberwerrner Bühne in summer 1984. Its first six productions were rural comedies (Bauerntheater); after a pause it turned to folk and boulevard theatre with Der Meisterboxer (1988), which the group regards as its turning point. Demand for seats grew with each production, and in 1992 the group replaced free admission with tickets; Der nackte Wahnsinn (2011) holds the record with twelve performances. The association was founded at a meeting of thirteen members in the parish hall on 21 December 1997, and in October 2000 it joined the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. and thereby the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT). Werner Lehrl later handed over direction to Peter Kuhn, who also became chairman.[1]
Repertoire
The group concentrates on German and English-language comedies and farces, with Franz Arnold and Ernst Bach the most frequently played authors. Besides the numbered main productions it has occasionally staged Christmas plays (X), children's plays (K), short one-act plays (E) and supporting programmes of sketches (R).[2] The 43rd production, Die vertagte Hochzeitsnacht in spring 2026, drew 1,256 spectators.[3]
