History

The conversion of Wiltingen's old wine-growers' cellar into a modern community hall (Bürgerhaus) at the end of the 1980s led to the founding of several new clubs in the village. A first meeting of 24 people interested in theatre took place in November 1990, and the group initially performed as the Reblaus-Theater within the carnival club „Reblaus“. Its first appearance was on 20 April 1991 in the Bürgerhaus with four short pieces by Karl Valentin and Ludwig Thoma; further appearances that year followed at a parish festival, a family festival of the carnival club and the village fair, and its first Christmas fairy tale, Hänsel und Gretel, was staged in the same year. Guest performances followed in neighbouring places, among them Schoden, the Saar-Mosel-Halle in Konz, Feyen, Tarforst and the Roscheider Hof.[2]

By 1992 the group had grown to 46 members. It separated from the carnival club by mutual agreement and founded the association kleine bühne Wiltingen e.V. on 4 April 1992; the two clubs have since continued to cooperate, for example in joint purchases of stage equipment.[2]

The group marked its 15th anniversary in 2007 with two plays in the Bürgerhaus, its 20th anniversary in 2012 with a theatre day of pieces by Loriot, and its 25th anniversary in 2017 with a special version of the comedy Unter Bademänteln.[2][4] Its 30th anniversary could not be celebrated as planned because of the COVID-19 pandemic; after a two-year break the group resumed with the fairy tale Frau Holle in 2022.[2]

At the time of the 25th anniversary in 2017 the association had about 120 members, more than 30 of them active; in 2022 membership reached 150, aged between 13 and 79.[2]

Repertoire

The group's programme has two strands: one or more comedies and one-act plays for adults each year, and a Christmas fairy-tale play for children in Advent, for which it was long the only provider in the surrounding area. Up to its 25th anniversary it staged exclusively fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, set in a Christmas context with elaborate lighting, sound and stage effects; by 2017 it had presented twelve of them in more than 120 performances. Dialect plays appeared occasionally in the early years, but the group has since performed only in Standard German. In later years it added murder mystery dinners (Krimidinner), and youth productions have been staged repeatedly.[2] Since 1995 a separate performance of the fairy tale, later its dress rehearsal, has been given for senior citizens.[2]

Organisation

The association finances itself solely from the proceeds of its performances and regularly donates to municipal and social projects;[2] on its 25th anniversary in 2017 it made a donation to the aid organisation a mundo e.V.[4] It takes part in other village events, such as football tournaments of the sports club and the village shooting competition, and organises club trips.[2][7]
