History
According to the Kolping family, the cash book of the Catholic journeymen's association (Gesellenverein) shows that costumes were hired from a costume store in Dillingen in December 1870, the first evidence of theatre activity. The first play recorded by name, Der politische Schuster, was performed on St Stephen's Day 1873; since then the group has played at least once a year.[1] From 1873 to 1999 it gave performances at Christmas, on St Joseph's Day and at other occasions, with new stage scenery made in 1885 and 1897; no plays were staged during the First World War.[2]
Repertoire
Before 1945 the repertoire mixed patriotic and religious plays, Christmas plays and dramas by authors such as Heinrich Houben and Peter Dörfler with farces and one-act comedies; it also included a stage version of Der Freischütz (1906 and 1919).[2] Since 2000 the group has played one comedy each autumn, usually with eight or nine performances in October and November; most recent plays are by Wolfgang Bräutigam, and the director in the 2020s was Roland Kehrle.[1]
