History
The group was founded on 13 March 1983 by eight young people at the regulars' table of the hotel Zum Alten Friederich in Apelern. All of them had taken part in the village's annual carnival gala and wanted to perform beyond the carnival season. Apelern had earlier had a theatre group run by the volunteer fire brigade, which gave the new group its old scenery. Because a nearby group in Soldorf already performed folk plays, the founders decided to concentrate on comedies.[1]
Their first production was Marc Camoletti's Hier sind Sie richtig. The hotel's owners joined the club and built a stage, and four members travelled to Paris to shoot a five-minute Super 8 film in the street named in the play, which was shown at the start of each performance. The first performance took place on 18 October 1983. Since then the group has performed almost every year and, according to its own count, has given nearly 250 performances.[1]
After more than 20 years in Apelern the group moved to Lauenau for organisational reasons. In spring 2007 it performed Camoletti's Boeing Boeing in the hall of the Lauenau primary school while the Sägewerk was being converted. In autumn 2007, a few days after the new hall opened, it staged Lediglich ledig by Ute Tretter-Schlicker, who attended the premiere. In July 2011 the municipality of Apelern bought the former road maintenance depot and made its rooms available to local clubs, giving the group its own rehearsal room and storage.[1]
Repertoire
The group's repertoire consists mainly of German-language comedies and farces, including many by British authors such as Ray Cooney, Anthony Marriott and John Chapman, as well as crime comedies. Since around 2007 it has often staged two productions a year.[2]
