History
According to the group, amateur theatre has a long tradition in Schönbach; in the 1950s a teacher at the village school continued to stage plays with local residents. Out of this activity a teacher at the former Volksschule Schönbach founded the Laienspielkreis Schönbach-Utzerath in 1972, whose first production was Sieben Gläser Chambertin. The group later took the name Laienspielgruppe Schönbach-Utzerath.[1]
The 2020 production, Die nettesten Nachbarn der Welt, was cancelled two weeks before its premiere because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and no plays were staged in 2021 and 2022.[1][2] A production planned for 2023 did not take place because not enough actors were available, and the group has since appealed for new members, especially young people.[1]
Repertoire
The group performs farces, comedies and Lustspiele. Over the last two decades its plays have increasingly been performed in dialect, mixing the members' local varieties of Eifel Platt (in the group's words, Schimija, Mörrena, Doschenda un Utzenda Platt); the group regards this as a contribution to keeping the regional dialect alive. Performances take place in the weeks before Easter, with a final performance on Easter Sunday.[1]

Venue
In its early years the group toured as a kind of travelling stage, performing in the Volksschule in Schönbach as well as in Utzerath and Ulmen. Since the old school building in Schönbach was modernised in the 1990s and reopened as the Bürgerhaus Alte Schule, the group has performed only there.[1]
Organisation
The group describes itself not as a club in the conventional sense but as an interest group; in 2019 it gave its number of active members as 30.[3]
