History
Amateur theatre in Mähring is traced to the local Burschenverein (young men's association), founded on 4 October 1919, which staged its first three-act play in the same year. In the interwar years plays were often performed together with members of the volunteer fire brigade, sometimes three in one year. Performances stopped during the Second World War and resumed after 1947 under the direction of the parish priest. In 1951 the Jugendheim (youth centre) was built with a theatre stage; at that time mainly serious plays were performed.[1]
In 1985 the parish took over and renovated the Jugendheim, and the group adopted the name Theatergruppe St. Katharina. Theatre activity lapsed after 2004 and was revived in 2015.[1] A youth group was formed on 3 December 2017 and gave its first performance in March 2018.[1] In 2019 the group had 18 active adult players and 8 young players.[1] After a longer break it returned to the stage in 2023.[2]
Repertoire
The group stages one three-act comedy a year, usually with four performances; for Herkules der Musterstier (2019) the ensemble translated the Upper Bavarian original into the local Upper Palatinate dialect and moved the action to places in the municipality.[1] After the revival in 2015 the group first performed Im Schrank ist der Teufel los and Der dalkerte Bua, followed by Gspenstermacher in 2018.[1][3]
