Musik und Theater Eichstätt e. V. (MuT) is an amateur music theatre and drama association in Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany. It grew out of an ensemble that staged The Rocky Horror Show in 1997 and was registered as an association in 2000. It mainly produces musicals, usually one about every second year, alongside plays, a carnival gala and an annual Heuriger evening.[1]

History

The ensemble formed around Florian Schmidt, who gathered musicians, singers, actors, technicians and make-up artists at the newly opened small-arts stage Zum Gutmann in Eichstätt to stage The Rocky Horror Show; it premiered on New Year's Eve 1997/98. Further productions followed: the musicals Under Broadway (1998/99) and Die Geister, die ich rief (1999) and the plays Der Brandner Kasper (from 1998) and Viel Lärm um nichts (2000).[1]

To give this loose group a legal and financial framework, the association Musik und Theater Eichstätt e. V. was founded on 22 May 2000 under the chairmanship of Dieter Eichiner. Its first productions as an association were the play Geige und Elster (2001), written by Florian Schmidt, and Alan Menken's musical Little Shop of Horrors (2002). In 2003 and 2005 the club organised ArTipi, a festival of several days in a circus tent with its own contributions and invited acts; according to the club it was not a success, caused financial losses and was discontinued.[1]

The club has received the prize of the Eichstätter Kulturstiftung and the cultural prize of the town of Eichstätt. It states that it has more than 200 members.[1]

Repertoire

Besides its musicals, the association holds a carnival gala (Prunksitzung) and a Heuriger, two regular events it has staged more or less every year.[1] Its list of projects includes the musicals and plays Im weißen Rössl, Der Watzmann, Der Sandlerkönig, Ganz oder gar nicht, Pizza Mortale, Swing Sisters, Rock of Ages and Tropical Scream (2024).[2]

The 2026 production was Disco Inferno – Das 1970er Musical by Justin Sepple, with German dialogue by Daniel Call and English song lyrics, a story inspired by Goethe's Faust. It was performed in Eichstätt's Boxerhalle.[3]
