History

The group began as the theatre section of the Volkstrachtenerhaltungsverein „Donautaler“, a society for the preservation of traditional costume, which performed in Neuburg's Kolpinghaus. After a guest performance in Nördlingen, the members met at the Hotel Neuwirt on 5 June 1981 to found the Neuburger Volkstheater. Their reasons included financial independence from the parent society, as performances abroad were planned, and the promotion of the town. In autumn 1981 the group toured Canada, performing Der Hausfreund at the Bayrischer Hof in Milton. Founded by ten theatre lovers, the club now states that it has more than 200 members.[1]

Venue

The group's own theatre, Box 15, is in former riding stables of the 15er Kaserne barracks behind the district office in Neuburg. Members converted it in weeks of voluntary work; it seats up to 60 people and has a small bar.[2]

Repertoire

The group's productions include the farce Die drei Eisbären and stage versions of episodes of the television series Königlich Bayerisches Amtsgericht (1968–1972), as reported by the Donaukurier and the Augsburger Allgemeine. It has also performed Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten in the open air at the Haus im Moos open-air museum.[3][4]

Youth theatre

A youth group for children aged 10 to 14 was founded on 11 December 1996, first led by Jürgen Zimmermann; its productions were developed by the group itself. On 2 March 2005 it became independent within the association as the Jugendtheater im Neuburger Volkstheater e. V..[5] Its recent productions include Die nordischen Götter, for which the young members wrote the script and made the costumes themselves.[4]

Awards and recognition

  • 2014: The youth theatre won the golden bird for best production at the Papageno International Youth Theatre Award with Der gewissenlose Mörder Hasse Karlsson by Henning Mankell, directed by René Schmager.[6]
  • 2016: The youth theatre received the Bavarian amateur theatre award Larifari for Was machen Wale falsch? by Kerstin Egerer and Lucie Schafferhans, first performed in February 2015 at the Box 15.[6]
