History

The theatre's marionette stage was built decades ago by its founder, Alois Raab. From 2019 it could no longer be used for safety reasons; in summer 2022 the team dismantled the old stage and a year later rebuilt it as a modular stage, on which scene changes are quicker and which can be reduced in size for rod-puppet plays.[3][4] The first marionette production on the new stage was Der Regenbogenfisch after the picture book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, for which volunteers made all the puppets and scenery themselves.[3]

Repertoire

In 2022 the theatre described several stages: the rod-puppet stage for traditional Kasper plays for families, performed live; a hand-puppet stage (La Petite) for short Kasper plays in nurseries, schools and private homes; a stage for small marionettes (Il Grazioso) for short operas and singspiele such as Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne; a stage with trick marionettes (Zirkus Marionetti) for markets and events; and the large marionette stage for fairy tales, fables and stories, and some operas for adults.[4] The theatre also hosts guest performances by other puppet theatres, such as the Marionettentheater Bille from Unterschleißheim.[1]

Organisation

The Puppenspielverein Kaufbeuren is supported by the cultural department of the town of Kaufbeuren.[5]

Awards

In 2024 the Puppentheater Kaufbeuren received the amarena German amateur theatre award (Deutscher Amateurtheaterpreis) of the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT) in the category Die Ausstattung der Darstellenden Künste (design) for Der Regenbogenfisch. The jury praised its elaborate and atmospheric design and craftsmanship.[2] The prize was presented at a gala in Hamburg on 21 September 2024.[3]
