Salzachbühne Burghausen e. V. is an amateur theatre group based in Burghausen, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1993, it stages comedies, usually one full-length production a year, and since 2011 has performed in the Helmbrechtsaal of the town's Stadtsaal building.[1]

History

The association was founded on 9 September 1993 by 15 members of the theatre group of the Herzogstadt Burghausen, who set up on their own. In November of the same year it gave its first performance in the parish hall of the church Zu unserer lieben Frau, with three short plays by Hans Sachs: Der Rossdieb von Fünsing, Der Krämerskorb and Der tote Mann. From 1995 its main venue was the hall of the Haus der Begegnung in the Spitalgasse, and the town provided rehearsal and storage rooms at the Schießstattweg.[1]

During the 1990s and early 2000s the group also took part in open-air events on Burghausen Castle. Members appeared in the open-air play Aus heiterem Himmel directed by Martin Lüttge in 1995, in the Meier-Helmbrecht plays of the Theaterhof Priesental in 2001, and, during the Bavarian state garden show held in Burghausen in 2004, in repeated performances of Der tote Mann and Ritter Degenhart und Kunigunde on the castle. On 17 July 2004 the Salzachbühne and the Theaterburg Burghausen jointly hosted the district conference of the Upper Bavarian amateur theatre association, attended by around 230 people.[1]

In March 2005 the group played for the last time in the Haus der Begegnung, whose hall was being rebuilt without a stage, and moved its November production to the stage in the gymnasium of the Aventinus-Gymnasium. In 2006 its clubhouse at the Schießplatzweg was demolished; members converted rooms in the former "Kirsch-Halle", which it shares with the Theaterburg, into a new clubhouse. Since November 2011 the group has performed in the Helmbrechtsaal.[1] The Helmbrechtsaal is one of the smaller rooms of the Stadtsaal, a former government building on Burghausen's town square.[2]

The association marked its 25th anniversary in 2018 with a production that revisited scenes and motifs from earlier plays; at a celebration evening the president of the Bavarian theatre association honoured long-standing members. Activity stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic from spring 2020 until summer 2022, and the group returned to the stage in October 2022. In October 2023, shortly before a performance, the group's props cellar flooded; many props were lost and were replaced with the help of donations.[1]

Repertoire

The group mainly performs comedies, farces and crime comedies, with one production in most years and occasionally two. Children and teenagers of the association have performed short curtain-raisers and sketches alongside the main play, and in 2023 the group staged for the first time a play by a Burghausen author, Felix Buchmair's Bläd glaffa. Its most recent production was Wer glaubt denn scho' an Gspenster?.[1]
