The Salztheater Traunstein e. V. is an amateur theatre association from Traunstein, Bavaria, Germany.[1] It was founded in 1994 to stage a play for the Bavarian Year of Salt in 1995, and later concentrated on English comedies and crime plays, performing mainly at the Theater-Strickerei in Grabenstätt, which it co-founded in 2016.[2]
History
The association was founded on 1 July 1994 at a meeting in the Zieglerstube of the Heimathaus in Traunstein, attended by the then mayor Fritz Stahl. The occasion was the Jahr des Salzes (Year of Salt) proclaimed for 1995 by the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, whose state exhibition on salt was shown in Bad Reichenhall, Rosenheim and Traunstein. The idea came from Gerhard Brusche, who became the association's long-time chairman. Together with the playwright Gerhard Unterforsthuber and Franz Haselbeck of the Traunstein city archive he developed the first play, Zu Traunstein der Galgen, which premiered during the 1995 state exhibition; the group took its name from the occasion.[2] The association celebrated its 20th anniversary on 11 July 2015 with a programme of scenes from earlier productions.[2]
On 28 October 2016 the Salztheater, together with the Junge Chiemseer Bühne and the Chiemgau Theater Ensemble, opened the Theater-Strickerei in Grabenstätt, a small stage for theatre, music and other events.[2] Gerhard Brusche, who acted in and directed many of its productions, died in 2026 at the age of 71.[3][4]
Repertoire
Besides classics such as Figaros Hochzeit, Pippi Langstrumpf and Das Gespenst von Canterville, the group has focused on English comedies. A bayerischer Jedermann was staged in the open air in both Traunstein and Grabenstätt in the 2007/2008 season.[2] Other productions included Ein ungleiches Paar and Ein Schlüssel für zwei.[5]
