History
The theatre was started in autumn 2002 by Christine Kaulberg and her husband. After years of searching for a space, the group played first in the KunstWerk and then at the Christoph-Scheiner-Gymnasium, before setting up its stage in a former swimming pool in the Bürgerhaus Neuburger Kasten.[1][2] As a project of the local multi-generation centre (Mehrgenerationenhaus), the group aims to bring young and old together; it took part in a nationwide promotional film for the multi-generation centre programme and was recognised for its participation in the Deutscher Engagementpreis 2014.[1]
Repertoire
All plays are written by the members as a team, and the stage, the hand and rod puppets and the costumes are mostly made by the group itself; the plays often deal with topical issues in a way suitable for children, with themes such as friendship and community. By 2025 about 15 plays had been created; each is performed 12 to 14 times per season, usually in two afternoon performances on autumn and winter weekends.[1][2] Recent productions include Findet Darko! (2024),[3] Die magische Brücke (2025), which used black light effects,[2] and Der Blaue Kristall (2026), about a puffer fish searching for a lost crystal.[4] The group also staged a treasure hunt, Wo ist Flocki?, at the Landesgartenschau in Ingolstadt.[5] At the 4th Bavarian amateur figure theatre festival in Kaufbeuren in April 2025 it performed Frederik, die Maus.[6]
Venue
The puppet stage with its auditorium is located in a former swimming pool in the Bürgerhaus Neuburger Kasten, Fechtgasse 6, in Ingolstadt's old town.[7][1]
Organisation
The Schanzer Puppenspieler are run entirely by volunteers.[1]
