History
The group began in 1975 as a lay theatre group (Laienspielschar) rehearsing and performing in the multipurpose room of the Protestant Emmaus parish in Neusäß, where chairs had to be cleared and the stage built up from the basement for every rehearsal. Productions remembered from this period include Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank (1985), in which the audience sat behind the same doors that enclosed the families in the play, and Thornton Wilder's Unsere kleine Stadt (1986). The last play staged in the church hall was Michael Ende's Die Spielverderber (1990).[2]
When Neusäß became a town in 1988, the group inaugurated the stage of the new Stadthalle with Johann Nestroy's Der Talisman, playing four performances to about 1,200 spectators. This prompted it to seek a venue of its own, and in 1989 it became a registered association, as the town could only provide premises to an association. In summer 1990 it moved into the school hall of the primary school at St. Ägidius.[2] The association celebrated its 30th anniversary on 5 October 2019.[4] There were no performances in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[3] At its 35th anniversary the group postponed a larger celebration to its 40th.[5] In October 2018, after a break of more than three years, it re-established a children's and youth ensemble, the Junges Theater der SGN.[4]
Repertoire
By 2018 the group had staged more than 80 productions in 43 years: full-length plays with adults and short plays with children for summer and Christmas parties.[3] The adult repertoire includes classical comedies by Molière, Goldoni, Kleist, Nestroy and Oscar Wilde, modern classics by Brecht, Dürrenmatt, Frisch and Priestley, and crime plays and comedies. The cast rehearses two to three times a week.[2]

Venue
Since 1990 the group has played in the Aula (school hall) of the primary school at St. Ägidius, Bürgermeister-Kaifer-Straße 8, in Neusäß; the former bicycle cellar next to it serves as store and workshop. The town installed a fixed stage platform; the association equipped the proscenium stage and its lighting itself, added a velvet curtain in 1997 and a separate lighting booth in 1999. In 1996 the town provided upholstered seating and an emergency exit, meeting the fire safety requirements.[2][7]
Organisation
