The Schlosshof-Spiele Roth (also Schloßhofspiele Roth) are an amateur open-air theatre in Roth, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Since 1957 they have staged a summer production almost every year in the courtyard of Schloss Ratibor, mostly classical comedies performed in historical costume.[1][2]
History
The Schlosshof-Spiele grew out of the Sing- und Spielschar of the Protestant youth in Roth, led by deacon Theo Wiegel; their first production was the Singspiel Der Nachtwächter in 1957. Since then they have played in the castle courtyard every summer, except in 1959 and, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 and 2021.[1][3] From 1997 many productions were staged in adaptations by Werner Müller; since 2025 Tobias Kilian, the group's director, has adapted the plays.[3][4][5] According to the group, the former singing and acting troupe has become a semi-professional theatre group known beyond Roth.[1]
Repertoire
The repertoire consists mainly of classical comedies, with Shakespeare, Molière, Goldoni and Hans Sachs the most frequent authors, as well as boulevard comedies and occasionally more serious plays such as Kleist's Der zerbrochne Krug (2002) and Chekhov's Die Möwe (2019). All productions are staged in historical costumes matching the period of the play.[1] Besides the annual production, the group keeps a repertoire of short carnival plays by Hans Sachs (Die gestohlenen Schinken, Das Kälberbrüten, Die listige Buhlerin, Das Pelzwaschen, Der Rossdieb zu Fünsing), Curt Goetz's Der Ausbruch des Weltfriedens and Rudolf Otto Wiemer's Christmas play Der Brief, der Stein, das Messer, which it performs at private and company events.[6] In 2025 the regional press described Das Haus in Montevideo as a comedy "with bite" and local references.[5]
