History

From 1950 the volunteer fire brigade of Schwiegershausen held an annual ball at which members, coached by Gerhard Niehus, performed a full-length play, with women from the village recruited for female roles. In the late 1970s the tradition faded. In 1993 Manfred Wode, who had acted at the fire brigade balls since the age of 18, announced in the village newspaper his plan to found a theatre club, inspired by the Lerbacher Komöd'chen in nearby Lerbach. Ten acquaintances joined him, and the landlord Hans Berger made the stage of his Gasthof Ohne Sorge available and renovated it at his own expense. The first production, Dieter Adam's Blaues Blut und Erbsensuppe, premiered on 31 October 1993.[2]

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 the group could not perform live and instead launched a YouTube channel, Dorfbühnen-TV, with short sketches. In 2025 the club had 118 members, 19 of them active in the theatre. The inn's regular restaurant business closed in 2026, but the club continues to use its hall.[1]

Repertoire

Since 1993 the group has staged 31 plays, mainly three-act farces, comedies and folk plays, all set in rural surroundings and adapted to the local setting. Each season comprises nine performances on autumn weekends, with the audience seated at tables and served food and drink.[1] Its 2024 production was Klassischer Besuch.[2] In October 2026 it premiered Winnie Abel's comedy Es fährt kein Zug nach Irgendwo to a nearly sold-out house.[3]

Recognition

The group received the cultural prize of the Regionalverband Harz. According to the club, its commitment to preserving the local Low German dialect led to its inclusion in the German inventory of intangible cultural heritage under the entry for regional dialect theatre.[1][4]
