The Studiobühne Erlangen e. V. is an independent theatre association in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany, that arose from a student initiative. First founded in 1946 and re-founded in 2009, it stages on average up to ten productions a year – plays, musicals, readings and performances – at various venues in Erlangen and the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

History

The association was first established in 1946. Since its re-founding in 2009 it has grown from a purely student ensemble into a mixed group of more than 60 members from many backgrounds, open not only to students of theatre studies but to anyone interested. It describes itself as one of the largest independent theatre associations in Germany to have grown out of a student initiative. The association marked five years since its re-founding with Mixtape (2014/15) and its tenth anniversary in 2018/19.

Repertoire

Productions range from classics such as Brecht's Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder, Kleist's Penthesilea, Schiller's Die Räuber, Büchner's Woyzeck and Beckett's Warten auf Godot to contemporary plays, musicals, devised pieces, readings and comedy formats.

Venue

The Studiobühne has no permanent rehearsal room or stage of its own. It works with changing venues, including the E-Werk, the Kulturforum Logenhaus, the Kunstpalais and the Bürgertreff Röthelheim in Erlangen, the Gostner Hoftheater, Luise – the Cultfactory and the Z-Bau in Nuremberg, and Kopf & Kragen in Fürth.

Organisation

The Studiobühne Erlangen is run entirely by volunteers. In keeping with its principle of an open theatre without an artistic director, its board has no chair but five members with equal rights. It is financed from project income, donations and cultural funding.
