The Theater-Schmiede Bobingen is an amateur theatre group in Bobingen, in the district of Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany.[1] Founded in 1989 in a Catholic parish of Bobingen, it stages comedies, serious folk plays, fairy-tale plays and crime plays, and since 2009 has revived the tradition of passion plays in the town.[1][2]

History

In 1988, when a Catholic kindergarten was being built in Bobingen-Siedlung, the leader of the youth working group of the parish Heilige Familie decided with young people of the parish to raise money for it with a play. In 1989 the group gave two performances of Pizza à la Schrapfing under the name Theater-Schmiede and donated the proceeds to the parish for the kindergarten. Five years later it was revived with the aim of staging one play a year in Bobingen-Siedlung. From 1996 it also played at the Laurentiushaus in the town centre, using its own stage set, and part of its takings each year goes to charitable causes.[1]

At its tenth anniversary in 1999 the group turned from rural farce (Bauerntheater) to boulevard comedy, and from 2003 it aimed at two productions a year, one in spring and one in autumn. In April 2005 it founded a children's and youth section, the Schmiedlinge, for players aged 8 to 15. In 2009 it staged a passion play in Bobingen for the first time in almost 250 years and has since repeated it at intervals.[1] It celebrated its 25th anniversary on 30 August 2014.[3]

The town of Bobingen awarded its Kulturpreis 2012 to the group's founder and director,[4] and its Kulturpreis 2020, presented in July 2021, to a long-standing actor of the group who had played the title role in its 2019 production of Jedermann.[5][2] In autumn 2026 the group announced the premiere of D'Artagnan und die drei Musketiere, a play in three acts written by its director after Alexandre Dumas's novel The Three Musketeers, with 55 performers.[6]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from farces and boulevard comedies (including plays by Ray Cooney and Peter Millowitsch) to serious folk plays such as Ludwig Thoma's Magdalena, fairy-tale and adventure plays, crime plays such as Agatha Christie's Die Mausefalle, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Jedermann. The passion plays were written by M. Bernard.[2] Between 1989 and 2015 the group also performed short Christmas plays and nativity plays.[2]
