History

The association celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017 with the open-air production Stoapfälzer Jedermann in the Treidling quarry in Nittenau; the performances were sold out in advance.[2] This places its founding in about 1992.

The Jedermann production began a series of dialect adaptations of well-known plays (the "Stoapfälzer" series), written and directed by Christina Fink-Rester.[3] It was followed in 2019 by Stoapfälzer Pygmalion – My Fair Lady and in 2026 by Stoapfälzer Sommernachtstraum.[3][4]

Geisterwanderung

The Geisterwanderung zu Nittenau ("ghost walk of Nittenau") combines a play in three acts with a hike through the Regen valley. A bus takes the audience from Nittenau to the first castle, Burg Hof am Regen; the walk then leads past Schloss Stefling towards Neuhaus, and the three scenes are set at Burg Hof am Regen, Schloss Stefling and the ruined castle of Stockenfels. The scenes stage local legends: the "Reiter ohne Kopf" (headless rider) at Hof am Regen, a witches' dance at Stefling and the "Bierpanscher" (beer adulterers) of Stockenfels. [1][5] Both the association and the regional tourism association's 2017 events guide call it "the most unusual festival play in Bavaria".[6] It is performed on a few Saturday evenings each summer, for example on 8 July, 5 August and 2 September 2017, on 13 July, 3 August and 7 September 2019, and on 29 August, 5 and 12 September 2026.[6][5][1]

Repertoire

Besides the Geisterwanderung, the association stages larger open-air productions, usually as Upper Palatinate dialect versions of classic plays:[3]

  • 2017: Stoapfälzer Jedermann – Die ewige G'schicht vom stoareichen Mo am Abgrund vo seim Leb'n, by Christina Fink-Rester, freely after Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Jedermann and on motifs by Franz von Kobell, in the Treidling quarry.[3][2]
  • 2018/19: a murder-mystery dinner (Krimidinner) set in the "Bar jeder Vernunft", with a four-course menu.[3]
  • 2019: Stoapfälzer Pygmalion – My Fair Lady, Christina Fink-Rester's dialect version of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion as a musical after My Fair Lady, set in the 1950s. It was performed six times from 10 to 17 August 2019 on the Kirchplatz in front of the Haus des Gastes, with 21 amateur performers and a stand for 192 spectators.[3]
  • 2026: Stoapfälzer Sommernachtstraum, an Upper Palatinate version of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with 35 participants, on an open-air stage on the Turnerwiese in Nittenau, with performances until 8 August.[4]

Under the name "Theater Muckenbach" the association has also staged the comedies Mit allen Wassern gewaschen, Currywurst & Kaviar and Scharf wie Peperoni.[7] It further takes part in local customs, such as a Starkbierfest (2018) and a Walpurgis Night celebration with the fire brigade in Bergham on the eve of 1 May.[8][9]

Organisation

The town's tourist office in Nittenau sells tickets for the association.[3]
