History
The club followed on from a theatre and mandolin club called Edelweiß, which had existed in the village from 1915 to 1945. It was founded on 17 November 1948 by five young men from Elliehausen at the Gasthaus Berge; Hans-Ulrich Fischer suggested the name after Millöcker's operetta. Five more members joined at the first meeting.[2][3] The founders first planned to stage Kleist's Der zerbrochene Krug but found it too difficult, so the club's first play, on 27 March 1949, was the comedy Robert und Bertram. As only men could be members, actresses were borrowed for female roles. Admission required a unanimous vote, and membership only reached 25 in the mid-1950s.[3][2]
In its early years the club also played in neighbouring villages, but because these performances lost money it performed only once a year in Elliehausen from 1959, and stopped theatre altogether from 1967; after a production in 1971, there was another break until 1980. Theatre resumed in 1980 with Ein Staatsanwalt geht angeln, with annual performances in Elliehausen and other places, including Bovenden, where the club gave its fortieth performance in 2023. Women were admitted as members for the first time in 1984.[2]
On 4 February 1990, a few months after the opening of the inner German border, the club performed Hochzeitsreise ohne Mann in the village inn of Kirchgandern in Thuringia, then still in the GDR's border zone; the club believes it was one of the first amateur theatre groups to play in the GDR after the border opened. Performances in Kirchgandern on the last weekend of January have remained a fixture of its season. In the 2000s the club founded a youth group, introduced numbered seats and advance sales, and from 2004 gave double performances on Saturday and Sunday because of demand. It celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023.[2]
Repertoire
The club performs comedies. Recent productions include Kleinstadthexen, Camping, Koks und Hollywood, Entschuldigen Sie, sind Sie nicht...?! and 50 – und alle spielen verrückt.[4] For the 2027 season, premiering in January, it is staging Marc Camoletti's Hier sind Sie richtig! at the multi-purpose hall in Göttingen-Grone.[1]
