Theater Brücken (Brücken e. V., "Bridges") is a Russian–German amateur theatre group in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany. It was founded in 1998 by Russian-speaking students of the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg and performs in both Russian and German.[1][2]

History

The group was founded in winter 1998 at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg on the initiative of a few theatre-loving Russian-speaking students, together with the Russian director Elena Forr. Its first production, Leonid Filatov's Märchen vom tapferen Schützen Fedot, premiered in June at the university's experimental theatre and was a surprising success with Russian-speaking audiences and students and lecturers of Slavic studies. In the 1998/99 season the group organised a New Year's party for children in Nuremberg as part of the "Russian Winter", presented a self-written humorous programme, Apriler Thesen, on 1 April 1999, and repeated Fedot at the Gemeinschaftshaus Langwasser in Nuremberg.[2]

In May the members decided to register the group as an association named Brücken, with the aim of promoting intercultural contact and international understanding and of making its performances accessible to both Russian- and German-speaking audiences. The first production in this spirit was Schluckauf by Anatoly Gavrilov from Vladimir, a homage to Venedikt Yerofeyev, performed twice in German and once in Russian; the German translation was by Peter Steger, the city of Erlangen's town-twinning officer.[2] Since 2004 the association has also worked on the integration of Russian-speaking migrants in Erlangen.[1]

With Edward Albee's Die Zoogeschichte, directed by Fedor Nevelski, the group took part in the 4th international amateur theatre festival Lubitelivy in Sillamäe, Estonia, where Lena Krasotina received a diploma for best male role as Jerry.[3]

Repertoire

The group's productions, from the earliest, are: Das Märchen vom tapferen Schützen Fedot, Schluckauf, Leichtsinnige Gespräche, Peter Weiss's Wie dem Herrn Mockinpott das Leiden ausgetrieben wird, Seelenstunde, Wassilissa Wunderschön, Lorca's Bluthochzeit, Swifthaus, Schwarze Milch, Der steinige Weg zum anderen, Die seltsame Welt des Theaters, Fremdes Blut, Kaddisch, Pushkin's Kleine Tragödien, Metro, Pugachev (after Sergei Yesenin), Die Zoogeschichte and Eine alte Frau für die Rolle von Frau Dostojewski.[4]
