The Theater der Altstadt Nürnberg e. V. is an amateur theatre association from Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1959 within the Verband Merkur, it stages a fairy-tale play for children every season, adapted by the group itself, as well as comedies for adults, at its home stage in the Rudolf-Steiner-Haus in Nuremberg and on tour in the surrounding region.[1][2]

History

The association was founded in Nuremberg in 1959. It grew out of the mixed choir of the Verband Merkur and at first performed only at the club's internal Christmas parties; over the years it separated from the choir and became an independent group within the Merkur family. It then performed in Nuremberg's old town, in various districts of the city and in the surrounding area, and guest performances became a regular part of its work. Its authors have included Curt Goetz, Hans Sachs, Ludwig Thoma, Carlo Goldoni and Jean Anouilh, alongside fairy tales after the Brothers Grimm, Andersen and Hauff and fairy tales written by the group.[1]
