History
Werner Hofmann founded a theatre group in Karlstadt in 1982, and its first production was staged in 1983 in the Schwanensaal of the Sparkasse Karlstadt. For ten years the group worked as a study group of the local adult education centre (Volkshochschule); in November 1994 it became the registered association Theaterbühne Karlstadt e. V. Its most elaborate production to date, according to the group, was Jedermann in 2000. After two years of conversion work, its own theatre in the centre of Karlstadt opened in September 2002.[1]
Repertoire
The association stages comedies, drama, family plays and literary evenings. Its archive includes Ray Cooney and John Chapman's Jetzt nicht, Liebling, Marc Camoletti's Hier sind Sie richtig!, Frederick Knott's thriller Warte, bis es dunkel ist, Fitzgerald Kusz's Franconian Schweig, Bub! and Die Schlammschlacht, Die Kaktusblüte by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy, Der Vorname, Christine Nöstlinger's Konrad oder Das Kind aus der Konservenbüchse, and Hilfe, die Herdmanns kommen!.[2]
Recent productions have been reviewed in the Main-Post and the Main-Echo: a Loriot evening (2024), Stefan Vögel's black comedy Die Niere (2025), Der kleine Prinz with four young actors, directed by Maria Emsden (2025), and Frank Pinkus's Die besten Tage meines Lebens under guest director Thomas Gregor Willberger (2026). The theatre has also hosted productions of the Karlstadt secondary school, such as a play based on The Diary of Anne Frank in 2025.[3] In October 2026 the association premiered the comedy Kalter weißer Mann by Dietmar Jacobs and Moritz Netenjakob, directed by Werner Hofmann.[4]
