History

According to the group's chronicle, amateur theatre in Schönberg largely came to a halt under the Nazi regime. In 1947 Sepp Süß founded a theatre group that staged the play with songs Die Bettelprinzessin with a ten-piece orchestra. From 1948 local clubs – the forest society, the choral society and the gymnastics club – acted as organisers; productions included the folk operetta Das Mädchen vom Neckarstrand, which was also performed in Schöllnach, Innernzell and Thurmansbang. This active period ended in 1958.[1]

The present group began in 1984 as an informal group with the comedy Der Weiberfeind and has staged a play every year since. In 1991 it became a registered non-profit association.[1] Its performances were cancelled in 2019/20 because of the illness of an ensemble member and in 2020/21 because of the COVID-19 pandemic; it returned at Christmas 2022 with the farce Deifi Sparifankerl.[2]

Repertoire

The group performs Bavarian comedies and folk plays, among them Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewige Leben, Der Brandner Kaspar schaut ins Paradies, Die Eisheilig'n und die kalt' Sophie, Herz ist Gold, Obandlt is and Der fast keusche Josef.[3] Holger Zimmermann's Die Versuchung des Aloysius Federl, set at a church fair in 1898, drew more than 1,100 visitors in 2018/19; the group donated €500 of the proceeds to local kindergartens.[2]

Organisation

Its members range in age from children to pensioners, and the club also takes part in local festivals and social activities.[1][4]
