History
On 1 November 1955 Baron Hermann von Lülsdorff invited five local men to a meeting at his house, because residents of the municipality of Dettendorf wished to found a theatre group; they decided to form a theatre group of the GTEV „Edelweiß“ Dettendorf/Kematen to promote amateur theatre and cultivate local customs and dialect. The baron supported the group with a donation of 500 Deutsche Mark for building a stage and remained its patron until his death in 1968. The first play, Der Gußeiserne, opened on 19 March 1956 in the hall of the Gasthof Kammerloher in Dettendorf, where the group played until 1968.[1]
After a break from 1969 to 1971 the group resumed in September 1972 in the new hall of the inn in Kematen, and since then it has staged a full-length play every year from Palm Sunday weekend. Audiences grew from about 300 spectators at two performances in the early years to over 900 in 2013; the number of performances rose to four from 1992 and six from 2013. In 2009 the group moved into a new, larger hall built by the Weingast family, with a new stage financed from its reserves, the parent association and a fundraising meal; the 2017 production set a new attendance record.[1] In 2026 the group celebrated 70 years of theatre.[2]
Repertoire
The group performs serious folk plays as well as, mostly, Bavarian comedies; earlier favourite authors such as Maximilian Vitus and Franz Schaurer were later replaced by Ulla Kling and Peter Landstorfer. Some plays have been revived, and one-act plays and sketches are also performed at local celebrations.[1]
