History

Amateur theatre in Kaifenheim dates back to the 1920s, when plays such as Der verlorene Sohn and Wilhelm Tell were staged. After a break during the Second World War, performances resumed in the winter of 1945 and continued annually until the early 1960s; they were organised by the village sports club and the drum corps, and included passion plays, Die Geierwally and Der zerbrochne Krug. In 1974 the local women's carnival society (Möhnenverein) revived the tradition and organised the performances until 1991. In 1983 the then players' group decided to perform only comedies.[3]

The group was selected as one of the recipients of the Kulturförderpreis of the Cochem-Zell district in 1991. In 1992 it took part in filming for a Südwestfunk portrait of the writer Clara Viebig.[3] The Theaterverein Kaifenheim e.V. was founded on 10 May 1992.[4] Until 1992 the full-length three-act plays were performed in standard German, followed by a one-act piece in the dialect; from 1993 onwards all plays have been performed in Kaifenheimer Platt.[3][4] According to the association, the choice between dialect and standard German was hotly debated in its early years.[2]

The association marked its 20th anniversary on 25 August 2012 with an evening featuring the a cappella group halbtrocken from Lehmen.[5] In 2014 it donated €3,000 from the proceeds of its 2013 season to the renovation of the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Kaifenheim; the 2013 and 2014 seasons each consisted of nine sold-out performances.[6] In 2016 the SWR radio station SWR4 recorded a feature on the group's dialect theatre at its first rehearsal of the season.[7] The 25th anniversary was celebrated on 25 March 2017 with a concert evening in the Gemeindehalle.[8]

In 2020 and 2021 the group did not perform live; instead it streamed recordings of earlier productions on YouTube, Dem Himmel sei Dank (2013) on 19 December 2020 and Alles nur Theater (2011) on 4 December 2021.[9][10] The 2022 season was cancelled and replaced by a 30th anniversary evening on 3 December 2022, which included a digitally restored recording of the 1992 one-act play Warum – Darum.[11] Live performances resumed in 2023.[12]

Repertoire

The group stages one comedy per year, usually a farce (Schwank) or rural comedy in three acts translated into Kaifenheimer Platt. Each season has nine performances on the last two weekends of November and the first weekend of December, opening with an afternoon premiere.[12][7] By 2022 the association had staged 30 plays.[11]
