History

The Weiherspiele (originally Weiherfestspiele) were started in 1984 by Josef Schmid and Siegfried Schmidt with amateur actors, songwriters and volunteers; the Theaterverein Markt Schwaben was founded in 1987.[1] Schmid was the festival's director, manager and author for 31 years.[1] The festival grew after its breakthrough with Die Frösche in 1990: from 1988, rising audiences and the first reports by Bavarian television led to more elaborate sets and costumes, and since 1991 there have been advance ticket sales, numbered seats and extra stands. In 2007 concrete steps were set into the western bank of the pond for the audience. At its peak a season drew 20,000 spectators.[1] The municipality gives a current figure of over 25,000.[3]

After a less successful season in 2016 under director Fritz Humpelmayr, the club paused the festival in 2017 to reorganise it; Schmid stepped down as chairman, and Ferdinand Maurer has directed the productions since 2018. The festival was also not held in 1992, in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2025.[1]

Repertoire

Until 2016 all Weiherspiele productions were written by Josef Schmid; their subjects range from historical and fantastic to crime stories and Bavarian everyday life, performed with songs and dance numbers.[1] More recent seasons have included Bavarian classics such as Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewig' Leben (2018) and Im Weißen Rössl (2023).[4] Performances usually take place from Thursday to Saturday at dusk in June, July or August.[1] At the Theater am Burgerfeld the club also presents children's theatre, concerts, cabaret and readings.[5]
