History
Plays were performed in Hergensweiler long before the club existed; its chronicle lists productions from 1887 onwards. On 8 December 1949, at the suggestion of Robert Grabherr, theatre enthusiasts met at the Gasthaus Schweinberger and founded the Theatervereinigung „Eintracht“ Hergensweiler, whose first production was Das Weihnachtslicht im Felsengrunde in the station restaurant (Bahnhofsrestauration).[1] On 29 April 1966 the station restaurant burned down, destroying the stage and all the hand-painted sets, which forced a break until 1969; the group then played in local inns until it moved into the newly built Leiblachhalle in 1973.[1]
In 1974 it gave the world premiere of Die Vernichtung, based on the novel Die Moorhexe by the Lindau author Celida Sesselmann and directed by Eugen Andergassen; one performance at the Stadttheater Lindau was, according to the club, the first time an amateur stage had played there. In 1976/77 the club was renamed Volksbühne Hergensweiler, and in 1982 it became a registered association. It celebrated its 75th anniversary in the 2024 season.[1][2]
Repertoire
The repertoire ranges from Bavarian and Swabian folk plays and comedies to religious plays and classics such as Molière's Der eingebildete Kranke (1982) and Nestroy's Lumpazivagabundus (1984). Since 2023 the club has chosen comedies set at Christmas time.[1][2]
