York Theatre Royal Community Productions

York Theatre Royal (YTR) is a theatre in York, England, which dates back to 1744.[1] YTR has a long-held association with local amateur groups and, since 2011, has developed a national reputation within the UK for it's large-scale community theatre productions. Led by the YTR creative team and often co-produced with local theatre companies, the productions depend on hundreds of local volunteers to bring local stories, issues and histories to life. Productions typically play in the Main House or as site-specific performances in the city centre. Productions receive critical attention from local[2], regional[3], and national press outlets.[4]

As noted on the York Theatre Royal website, productions have included:

  • Two Planks and a Passion (2011)
  • York Mystery Plays (2012)
  • Blood & Chocolate (2013)
  • In Fog and Falling Snow (2015)
  • The Beggars Opera (2016)
  • Everything is Possible: The York Suffragettes (2017)
  • The Coppergate Woman (2022)
  • Sovereign (2023)
  • His Last Report (2025)

In 2025, YTR received funding to expand their community production work beyond the stage through the Sweet Legacies project.
