The freies theaterwerk gavroche e. V. is an independent amateur theatre association in Berlin, Germany, active mainly in the Schöneweide area of Treptow-Köpenick. Named after Gavroche, the street boy in Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, it describes itself as a working community for "culture of living" that uses theatre as its medium, with a focus on children and young people.

Aims
The association aims to ensure that children and young people in particular, but also adults, are not excluded from culture for financial or other reasons. It sees its work as socio-cultural and theatre as a "school of life", and seeks to bring together young people from eastern and western Berlin districts and from different ethnic backgrounds, as well as different generations. Its projects may cooperate with professional artists and outside institutions.

Productions and projects
In 2014, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the association took part in a trinational youth theatre project with partners from France and North Macedonia on the theme of peace, with one-week meetings in Lyon in August, in Berlin in October and November, and in Tetovo in spring 2015, each ending in a performance. The German side was directed by Saskia Thomas.

In March 2017 it premiered a devised performance in the nave of the Christuskirche in Oberschöneweide, in which ten young people in a flat-share face three questions: how they want to live, how they want to die and what they stand up for. The production, under the artistic direction of Saskia Lily Thomas, was made with no budget. The group has also performed classic fairy tales each Christmas, a tradition that grew out of a "walking Advent calendar" in Schöneweide.

In 2024 the association organised an international youth theatre residency in Berlin and a German-French theatre performance, and started a new theatre group for people aged 15 to 35 that developed a collage on the theme of "in-between spaces" for performance in spring 2025.
