'''Theater am Stadtwald – Volksspielbühne des ASV Dachau e. V.''' is the amateur theatre section of the sports club ASV Dachau in [[wikipedia:Dachau, Bavaria|Dachau]], [[wikipedia:Bavaria|Bavaria]], Germany. Founded in 1953 as the ''Theatergemeinde des ASV Dachau'', it performs Bavarian dialect comedies in the club's own theatre hall and runs children's and youth ensembles.<ref name="historie" />

== History ==
Amateur drama had been part of club life at ASV Dachau since the sports club was founded in 1908, with members rehearsing short plays for club events. After the Second World War the character actors Michl Morgott and Sepp Thurner became the driving force of this activity, and in 1953 they founded the ''Theatergemeinde des ASV Dachau'' together with Harri Schubert and other regular players. The ASV gave the group the status of a club section and the use of its hall. Within a few years the group had become known beyond Dachau for its dialect theatre, and in 1957 it took its present name.<ref name="historie" />

In 1967 the ASV Dachau joined the Volksspielkunstverband Bayern (today the [[Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V.]]) on behalf of its theatre. Two years later, in the competition ''Laien spielen um die Wette'' organised by the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege and [[wikipedia:Bayerischer Rundfunk|Bayerischer Rundfunk]], the group won one of eleven main prizes among 190 assessed stages with the farce ''Die drei Dorfheiligen'' by Max Neal and Max Ferner.<ref name="historie" />

In 1990 a fire destroyed the club's theatre and gymnastics hall, including the stage, the dressing rooms, the costume store and all equipment. The group continued to perform in the hall of the Dachau Red Cross until, for its 40th anniversary in 1993, it moved into the newly built theatre hall of the ASV.<ref name="historie" />

== Repertoire ==
Since its beginnings the adult ensemble has staged two full-length comedies a year, in spring and autumn, each with eight performances, along with one-act plays for club festivities. Plays performed over the years include ''Die drei Eisbären'', ''Das sündige Dorf'', ''Der Meisterboxer'', ''Der Geisterbräu'' and ''Der Brandner Kaspar''. Food and drink are served during performances, which the group describes as one of its traditions.<ref name="historie" /> Recent productions include ''Der Latschenbauern-Sepp auf Brautschau'' and ''Herzlich willkommen oder seine Majestät der Kurgast''.<ref name="rueckblick" />

=== Youth stage ===
A youth group was founded in 1974 and first appeared that year with the fairy-tale play ''Der kleine Muck''. Its annual fairy-tale productions, such as ''Dornröschen'', ''Die Schneekönigin'' and ''Pippi Langstrumpf'', usually have four or five performances. From 2007 the youth stage played twice a year, starting with ''Das Gespenst von Canterville''.<ref name="historie" /> Because of growing numbers it split in 2010 into the ''Theaterkäfer'', who stage a Christmas play each year, and the ''Junges Ensemble'', which takes on more demanding and topical material. The Junges Ensemble received the Bavarian amateur theatre award ''Larifari'' in 2018 for ''Anne'', its version of ''[[wikipedia:The Diary of a Young Girl|The Diary of Anne Frank]]''.<ref name="kronmaus" />

== Partnerships and awards ==
Since 1974 the group has had a partnership with the [[Bürgerressource Bayreuth 1828 e. V.]], with guest performances in both towns. It is also linked with the Tour Theater Baden-Baden, at whose theatre festival it came second in 1997, and has since performed several times at the wine festival in Steinbach.<ref name="historie" />

The theatre section received the Kron-Maus cultural prize of the Überparteiliche Bürgergemeinschaft Dachau in 2007, and its youth section received the same prize in 2022.<ref name="historie" /><ref name="kronmaus" />
