According to the group, the first documented plays in Bernau were performed at the end of the 19th century in the Gasthaus ''Kampenwand'', still its venue today. After the Second World War the revival of theatre in the village was closely linked with Konrad Dummert and Engelbert Haumeier. The group has officially been called ''Bernauer Volksbühne'' since 1971 and became an independent registered association in 1991. The club's website gives its membership as 40, most of whom take part each year in some way, whether as actors or in stage building.<ref name="about" />
