The Original Murnauer Bauerntheater e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Murnau am Staffelsee in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1902, it is one of the oldest Bauerntheater (rural folk theatre) groups in Bavaria and stages one Bavarian comedy each year in the hall of the Griesbräu inn in Murnau.

History
The Murnauer Bauerntheater grew out of the Bürgertheater-Gesellschaft Murnau on the initiative of its chairman, Josef Fürst. Its first performance, the folk play Der Dorflump by Hermann Haas, was given on 20 July 1902 and repeated for the 20th anniversary on 10 September 1922. In 1907 the players rehearsed Die schöne Mirzl, the first play by Max Dingler, under the author's direction. Performances were held in a wooden hall at the Griesbräu-Keller and, in 1903, in the Postsaal; in 1912 the stage moved to the gymnasium built in 1905 by Emanuel von Seidl, and it was refitted again in 1933.

After the Second World War little remained of the earlier equipment, and the theatre was re-founded in 1954 as a section of the sports club TSV Murnau. In 1973 and 1977 it gave guest performances for patients of the Murnau trauma clinic and the Höhenried clinic. The 75th anniversary was celebrated in 1977 in the hall of the newly built Kurgästehaus, which became the theatre's home in 1978. In 1979 the members founded their own registered association, the Original Murnauer Bauerntheater e. V., which joined the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege.

For the 80th anniversary in 1982 the long-standing director Stefan Schalch revived Die schöne Mirzl. The production was recorded before an audience by Bayerischer Rundfunk from 16 to 18 November 1982, directed for television by Andreas Lippl, and broadcast on 26 June 1983. In the following years the group rehearsed two to three plays a year. After Schalch's death in 1986 Franz Fischer took over as director; in May 1998 Fischer and several players left to found a theatre association of their own. For its centenary the group staged Dingler's Der rote Rucksack.

Repertoire
The group stages Bavarian folk plays and comedies; today it puts on one play a year, given six performances in spring.
