== History ==
Amateur theatre in Westum predates the group: in the 1920s the local choral society performed in "Deckers Sälchen", after the Second World War the volunteer fire brigade staged dramas in the Saal Herges, and in the 1950s the village's bachelors' society was also active there. The present group was revived by Irmgard Kohzer and Monika Schneider, members of the village's women's carnival society. Rehearsals for its first play, ''Die Ersatzbraut'', began on 1 June 1983, and the comedy was performed in the Saal Herges on 1 April 1984.<ref name="awwiki" />

Hans-Hubert Decker chaired the association in the early 2000s; Monika Schneider was chair from 2012, and in 2019 she and Irmgard Kohzer also directed the productions. All five performances of ''Baby wider Willen'' in 2012 were sold out. The AW-Wiki gives the association's membership as 30 in 2008 and 38 in 2019.<ref name="awwiki" /> No performances were possible in 2020 and 2021 because of the [[wikipedia:COVID-19 pandemic in Germany|COVID-19 pandemic]].<ref name="ueber" />

The group has made donations to the Catholic parish of St. Peter in Westum, including 1,000 euros towards new nativity figures in 2011, and organises member excursions, for example to Paris in 2011.<ref name="chronik2011">[https://www.theatergruppe-westum.de/chronik/2011/ Chronik 2011], Theatergruppe 1983 Westum e.V., retrieved 14 October 2026. The group performs light comedies (''Lustspiele''), one production a year, with some titles, such as ''Der Meisterboxer'' and ''Mit Küchenbenutzung'', staged twice. In 2007 it also presented a children's play, and in 2011 a second short piece for the 1175th anniversary of Westum.<ref name="stuecke">[https://www.theatergruppe-westum.de/ Theatergruppe 1983 Westum e.V.], official website, retrieved 14 October 2026.
