Acht machen Theater (AmT) is an amateur theatre group from the Hanover region and Marklohe, Lower Saxony, Germany.[1] It was formed in 1997 by a group of students of German studies and stages comedies as well as serious plays at changing venues in the city and region of Hanover.[2]
History
According to the group's own account, the idea of putting on a play came up among students of German literature on an evening in 1997; about half a year later they performed a light comedy. After the first production only half of the original cast remained, and new players were recruited from the universities of Hanover. With Noises Off the group built a complete stage set for the first time, and Bunbury was its first costume play. In 2002 it staged its own adaptation of the film Ein Winternachtstraum, translated from the English screenplay by a member. From 2003, beginning with George Tabori's Mein Kampf, it also took on serious plays, and in 2005 smaller casts formed side projects alongside the main production. The group registered as an association at the beginning of 2004.[3][2]
For its tenth anniversary the group organised the first Hannoversches Amateurtheaterfestival under the motto "Kultur für Alle", held at the Freizeitheim Lister Turm from 21 September 2007. Eight groups and a clown gave ten performances, and professionals ran workshops and post-performance discussions; the festival had about 400 spectators.[4] The group's most recent documented production was Boeing, Boeing in January 2020.[5]
Repertoire
The early productions were mainly comedies and crime parodies; since 2003 the group has also performed dramas by authors such as Tabori, Sartre, Albee and Lutz Hübner.[3][6]
