Agnes-Bernauer-Festspielverein Straubing is an amateur theatre association in Straubing, Lower Bavaria, Germany. It stages the Agnes-Bernauer-Festspiele, a historical open-air play about Agnes Bernauer, who was drowned in the Danube at Straubing in 1435.[1][2]

Background

Agnes Bernauer, reportedly the daughter of an Augsburg bath-keeper, became the partner of Duke Albrecht III. On 12 October 1435 she was drowned in the Danube near Straubing on the orders of his father, Duke Ernst.[2]

History

The festival was first performed in August 1935, the 500th anniversary of Agnes Bernauer's death. The text was an amateur play, Die Agnes Bernauerin zu Straubing, written for the occasion by the teacher and local politician Eugen Hubrich. After its success, the play was performed again in 1937 on an open-air stage in the courtyard of Straubing's ducal castle (Herzogsschloss). The Second World War interrupted the tradition. A festival committee formed in 1952 revived it, and on 17 March 1953 the association was constituted and adopted its statutes.[1]

Productions followed at irregular intervals from the 1950s; since the 1990s they have been staged roughly every four years. For the earlier productions, the association mentions casts of around 200 amateur performers.[1]

Repertoire

Hubrich's play, revised for 1952, was used for decades. In 1995 Johannes Reitmeier and Thomas Stammberger wrote a new Historienspiel in 15 scenes, which was staged in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Reitmeier wrote a new version in 12 scenes for 2011, and Teja Fiedler wrote Agnes Bernauer. Ein Volksstück for 2019.[1] The next production is planned for 23 June to 23 July 2028 in the courtyard of the ducal castle, directed by Reitmeier.[3]

Organisation

The festival is organised by the Agnes Bernauer Festspielverein e.V., a registered association that recruits performers and backstage helpers from the public for each production.[3]
