The Laienspielgruppe Polle e. V. is an amateur open-air theatre group in Polle in the district of Holzminden, Lower Saxony, Germany.[1] Founded in 1986, it continues the tradition of the Polle castle festival plays of the 1930s and 1950s and performs on two stages in the ruins of Polle Castle.[2]

History

Polle had castle festival plays (Burgfestspiele) in 1930–35 and 1948–60 that were known beyond the region. The first post-war theatre group, the junge bühne burg polle, was founded in 1953 and existed until the early 1960s; it staged Goethe's Urfaust, Kleist's Der zerbrochne Krug, Ein Sommernachtstraum, Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, Wilhelm Tell and other plays at the castle, and guest-performed at the festival weeks in Bad Gandersheim in its second year. In 1956 it premiered three productions within four weeks, including the world premiere of Werner Schwenke's Frauen und Männer um Münchhausen in Bodenwerder. In 1958 the festival plays drew 42,000 spectators to 38 performances; from then on only the Landestheater Detmold performed, and after many performances were lost to bad weather the festival ended in 1961.[3]

In 1986 Dietrich Müller founded the Laienspielgruppe Polle e. V. with 16 residents to continue the tradition.[3] In 2025 the energy company Westfalen Weser recognised the group as a "cultural flagship" of the region with its WWKulturpreis.[4]

Repertoire

The group plays classics, comedies and fairy tales on the two stages of the castle ruins – the upper castle (Oberburg) and the Amtshof – and on request elsewhere. A fixed part of its programme is a 30-minute Aschenputtel play, performed with free admission at 3 pm on the fourth Sunday of each month from May to September on the upper castle stage, with the youngest members playing the doves.[2][5]

Venue

The group performs in the ruins of Polle Castle; its stage address is Amtsstraße 4 in Polle.[2][1]

Organisation

The group organises Polle's pumpkin market (Kürbismarkt).[2]

Awards

In 2025 the group received the WWKulturpreis25 of the energy supplier Westfalen Weser as a "cultural flagship of the region", with prize money of 1,000 euros; the award ceremony was held at the Stadttheater Minden.[4][6]
