The Theatergruppe im Kameradschaftsbund, known since 2014 as Theater am Retzenbach, is the theatre group of the veterans' and comradeship association Kameradschaftsbund Ederheim e. V. in Ederheim, Donau-Ries district, Bavarian Swabia, Germany.[1][2] Founded in 1979, it stages a full-length comedy in local dialect every spring in the Ederheim multi-purpose hall.[3][4]
History
The association, founded in 1920, staged the first documented play in Ederheim at its Christmas party on 26 December 1923, the two-act Es war einmal Krieg in the inn hall, and performed again at the Christmas parties of 1925 and 1927. After long periods of inactivity, the chairman Karl Steinmeyer revived theatre in 1979, partly to improve the association's finances; a stage was built for the hall of the Thalmühle, and the group began with the one-act plays Die geschmalzene Wette (1979) and Das Hörrohr (1980), followed in 1981 by its first full-length play. Since 1983 it has invited residents of local care homes to its dress rehearsals. It moved to the new multi-purpose hall in 1991, with a large stage and a rehearsal room built by members, and joined the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. the same year.[2]
Its greatest success was Ulla Kling's Renn, Oma, renn! in 1999, which the author attended and the Bavarian television filmed in part; in September 1999 the group was invited to perform it at the Swabian theatre days in Babenhausen. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004 with Der Geisterbräu, with more than 26 performers. In 2014 a directing duo took over and the group adopted the name Theater am Retzenbach and a new logo, and staged its first crime comedy, Tatort Villa Bock. From 8 people in 1979 it has grown to more than 60 people involved in each season, and it draws over 1,200 spectators a year (a record 1,700 in 2002).[2][3]
Repertoire
The group performs mainly comedies in the local dialect; in 2026 it staged Kohle, Moos und Mäuse on five dates in March.[2][4]
Venue
Since 1991 the group has played in the multi-purpose hall (Mehrzweckhalle), Waldstraße 20, in Ederheim; before that it performed in the hall of the Thalmühle.[2][4]
Organisation
The theatre group's annual Theaterkränzle, first held on 14 June 1980, reviews the past season and honours long-serving players and helpers.[2]
