Volksbühne Trostberg e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Trostberg in the northern Chiemgau, district of Traunstein, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1965 as a theatre section of the TSV Trostberg sports club, it was known as the Trostberger Bauerntheater from the 1970s or early 1980s until 2000. It plays mainly in the Postsaal in Trostberg.[1][2]
History
Beginnings
Theatre was performed in Trostberg before the Second World War; around 1950 several groups were combined as the Theatervereinigung Trostberg, which played in the Postsaal but gave up after some years.[2] In spring 1965 a group of founding members revived the Theatervereinigung within the TSV Trostberg, with Werner Steinecke as chairman and Willi Baumgartner as director. Its first production, Herz in der Lederhos'n, followed in November 1965 in the TSV gymnasium, where the group played each spring and autumn.[2][1]
Trostberger Bauerntheater
The group left the TSV and became an independent club under the name Trostberger Bauerntheater. The club's chronicle dates this to spring 1973, when a recruitment drive brought over 60 members; the club's "Über uns" page gives 1981.[2][1] From autumn 1973 the club played in the large Postsaal, whose run-down stage it renovated with help from the town and the brewery; the first production there was Der Ehestreik.[2] For many years each season ended with a weekend performance in the Gasthof zur Post in Tacherting.[1] The club gave guest performances outside Trostberg, including at the Platzl in Munich in 1975 at the invitation of Ludwig Schmid-Wildy and at the International Theatre Days in Rosenheim in 1986.[2]
When the town closed the Postsaal for rebuilding, the club moved to the hall of the Gasthof zur Post in Tacherting for five seasons from autumn 1991.[2][1] After its return to the renovated Postsaal it staged the premiere of Hans Gnant's Die Kreuzritter.[2]
Volksbühne Trostberg
Elisabeth Reininger led the club after chairman Franz Scharl fell ill in 1997 and was elected chair in 1999. Because the group was increasingly playing comedies besides rural plays, it was renamed Volksbühne Trostberg in 2000.[2][1] The 40th anniversary in 2005 was marked by a celebration with honours from the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater and by a production of Räuber Kneißl, about Mathias Kneißl.[2] Karina Liedl became chair in 2011, and the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in May 2015.[3]
Since 2016 the club has also staged literary evenings, on Karl Valentin (2016) and Erich Kästner (2019), and in 2023 it staged Michael Ende's Der Wunschpunsch for young and old.[4][5]
