WildWuchs Theater e. V. is an independent amateur theatre group in Bamberg, Upper Franconia, Germany. Formed in 2009 by students, it stages experimental, contemporary and political theatre, often at unusual venues, and received the city of Bamberg's E.T.A. Hoffmann Prize in 2022.[1]
History
The group has been active in Bamberg since the summer of 2009; its first production was Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in May 2010 at Bamberg's Jazzclub.[2][3] According to the city of Bamberg, the group was entered in the register of associations in 2017. Its stated aims are to promote theatre and performance art in Bamberg, to create a space for concerts, readings, festivals and exhibitions, and, reflecting its student origins, to interest young people in theatre.[1]
In July 2022 Bamberg's city council confirmed the jury's unanimous decision to award the WildWuchs Theater the E.T.A. Hoffmann Prize, one of the city's two alternating culture prizes, endowed with 6,000 euros. The city's cultural officer, Ulrike Siebenhaar, described the group as "wild, innovative and always surprising", both in its choice of venues and of plays and subjects.[1]
Repertoire
The group's early productions concentrated on 20th-century drama, including absurdist and existentialist plays by Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Eugène Ionesco. Later work has included adaptations of prose, Dada pieces, devised productions, a live radio play, a generational theatre project and theatre-education projects with young people. The group also stages actions in public space, such as an annual zombie walk satirising smartphone use.[3][1] In December 2021 it staged a grotesque Dadaist nativity play in the spirit of Hugo Ball at the Palais Schrottenberg.[4]
