History
The founder, Hans Hofmann, set up the dialect theatre in 1972 with seven like-minded people, and since 4 June 1972 the group has performed every year at weekends between Easter and Whitsun, mostly cheerful folk plays. For over 30 years its home was the youth centre of the St. Konrad parish. Since 1985 it has given regular guest performances in Burgenland, Austria, supported by the town of Weiden, and it has also performed in Italy. On 6 June 1990, at the invitation of Pope John Paul II, it provided music for the general audience in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.[1]
Repertoire
Besides the spring season of plays for adults, the group has staged fairy-tale performances "for children by children" each Advent since 1988, directed by Heiner Balk, in the Max-Reger-Halle in Weiden (850 seats). It also performs one-act plays and sketches at regional events.[1] Recent productions include Und alles auf Krankenschein (2023), Noch eine Leiche für Lily (2024), Ausser Kontrolle (2025) and Nichts als Kuddelmuddel (2026); the group also staged a two-part Das Dschungelbuch (2022 and 2023). The list of productions goes back to the first play, Die zwei Dickschädel, in 1972.[2] In 2011 it staged a play about Brother Konrad, Bruder Konrad der Heilige aus Bayern.[2]
Organisation
The association belongs to the Heimatring Weiden, the association of the town's cultural and heritage clubs, and to the Bavarian heritage association (Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege).[1]
Awards
The group won first place at the fourth Weidener Amateurtheatertage. In 1991 three of its members, Hans Roth, Josef Köppl and Hans Hofmann, received the gold badge of honour of the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater for 40 years of amateur acting.[1]
