The Inselbühne Baltrum is the amateur theatre section of the Kultur- und Sportverein Baltrum on the East Frisian island of Baltrum, Lower Saxony, Germany.[1] Its origins go back to the founding of the club in November 1965, and since 1978 it has performed every Wednesday during the tourist season.[2]

History

When the Kultur- und Sportverein Baltrum was founded in November 1965, an amateur drama section was planned from the start; for two years it alone represented the "culture" in the club's name alongside the sports sections. The players gradually gained a permanent venue, a growing audience and a larger repertoire, and since 1978 they have performed every Wednesday in the season in the island's gymnasium. An extension built in 1987 added dressing rooms, a complete stage with technical equipment and storage space. By 1999 the group had about 40 members, most of them islanders, and gave around 25 performances a year (29 in 1995) for audiences of up to about 300.[2]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from Low German plays, classics in verse, fairy tales and tragedies to farces, boulevard comedies, crime plays and musicals. Two new plays are prepared each year, and the most successful play of the previous year is offered as a third.[2] The 2026 season comprised Erich Koch's comedy Tante Wandas Auferstehung, Sławomir Mrożek's one-act play Auf hoher See (1961) and Tjark!, a one-act play by Uwe Friedrich and Winfried Picard about the sailor Tjark Evers, who died in fog trying to reach his family on Baltrum at Christmas 1866.[3]

Venue

The group's stage is in the island's gymnasium (Turnhalle), extended for theatre use in 1987.[2]

Organisation

The Inselbühne is the theatre section of the Kultur- und Sportverein Baltrum e.V.[1] In 1999 its members were in the Lower Saxony state association of amateur stages, which offers training seminars; Wilhelm Klünder of the Inselbühne had been the association's chairman for the previous four years.[2]
