History

The association – formerly the Verein für Kulturarbeit in Rosenheim e. V. – grew, like the Theater Belacqua in Wasserburg, out of the Vaganten, a group of young people who staged Schiller's Die Räuber in the open air with the director Toni Müller in the early 1980s. In 1983 the core group found a hall in the old town, the former Sau-Bräu on the Ludwigsplatz, which they rented and converted themselves into a theatre with a tavern; because the Grüner Markt was a few steps away, it was named Theater am Markt. The first premiere, in November 1984, was a double bill of the one-act plays Die Autopsie and Der kahle Berg by Jairo Aníbal Niño.[2][1]

Within about ten years the group staged some 90 productions of various genres, and in 1997 it received the Rosenheimer Kleinkunstpreis. In spring 2004, shortly before its 20th anniversary, it had to leave its theatre because the building needed extensive renovation. It found new premises at Chiemseestraße 31, converted them almost entirely by its own work within two months, and opened the new TAM OST on 30 October 2004; the suffix "Ost" (east) was added to mark the new location. By the end of 2007 the group had staged 103 productions.[2][1] Since late 2018 its motto has been "Das kann Theater". The local television station rfo made short documentaries about the theatre in 2015 and 2017.[1]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from contemporary drama to comedies, crime plays and an annual New Year's Eve and carnival show. Productions of the 2025/26 season included Wannie de Wijn's Der gute Tod, Woody Allen's Gott, Kalendergirls and Wir sind die Neuen, Jürgen Popig's stage version of the film by Ralf Westhoff; the programme also included Thomas Bernhard's Ritter, Dene, Voss and a stage version of Agatha Christie's Tod auf dem Nil.[3][4] The ensemble includes both members of the association and non-member performers.[1]

Venue

Since 30 October 2004 the theatre has been located at Chiemseestraße 31 in Rosenheim, with a theatre hall and the attached TheaterSchenke. The building is accessible by wheelchair; alterations were supported by the Emmy-Schuster-Holzammer-Stiftung, and the hall was renovated in 2015. The hall can also be rented for private and corporate events.[1]

Organisation

The theatre is run by the association Theater am Markt e. V., whose members work without pay; it has active and supporting members.[2]

Awards

In 1997 the TAM received the Rosenheimer Kleinkunstpreis.[2]
